What Borough Market is and why it is worth a visit

Borough Market is London's big food market, right by London Bridge station. Entry is free and open to everyone.

It is old. The London Museum says a market has traded near the south end of London Bridge for around 1,000 years. It has traded on its present site since 1756.

How to choose between the tours

Book a tasting tour if you want to eat, and the history walk if you want stories. There are three ways to do the market.

  • Graze on your own: free to enter, and you pay stall by stall. Best if you know what you like.
  • A guided tasting: from €93 for about 3 hours. The guide picks the bites and tells the story, so you do not have to choose.
  • A history walk: from €24 for 2 hours. You hear about prisons, the Globe and old Southwark, but food is extra.

When to go: best day, best time, opening days

Go on a weekday morning for the calmest visit. The market says it is busiest at peak times, above all on Saturday afternoons.

Borough Market is closed on Mondays. Hours change at Christmas and on bank holidays.

What to eat and drink at the stalls

Start with the classic British bites. The tours list sausage rolls, fish and chips and cheese as their tastings.

Drinks come up too. One tour pours local cider, and another pairs wine with its bites.

On your own, buy small portions at a few stalls. That way you can try more before you are full.

The stalls are the easiest place to eat, but some restaurants on the market estate stay open later. Check the market's own site for them.

Borough Market or Camden Market?

Go to Borough for food in the daytime, and to Camden for a late evening. Camden Market's food halls are open until 11pm every day.

Borough closes by 5pm and on Mondays. Its stalls focus on food and drink.

The Camden guide in the list above covers its tours and the canal boat ride.

Getting there and what else to see nearby

Take the Tube or train to London Bridge. The market is right next to the station, on the Jubilee and Northern lines and National Rail.

The address is 8 Southwark Street, London SE1 1TL. Buses 17, 21, 35, 47, 133, 343 and 381 stop within 5 minutes' walk.

Southwark Cathedral, the Shard and Shakespeare's Globe on Bankside are all a short walk away.

Before you book a Borough Market tour

  1. Avoid Mondays

The market is closed on Mondays. Tours run while the stalls are open.

  2. Check the diet rules

Some tours do not suit vegans or people with food allergies. Read the listing first.

  3. Find the start

Each tour meets at its own spot. The Eating London tour meets at The Market Porter, 9 Stoney Street.

  4. Bring a coat

Much of the walking is outdoors. The tea class is the indoor choice for a wet day.
