Stonehenge and Bath

Stonehenge and Bath fit in one day, but only on a tour or by car. Stonehenge has no station of its own.

On your own, take a train from Waterloo to Salisbury, about 1 hour 30 minutes. Then the Stonehenge Tour bus runs from the station. Bath is easier: direct trains from Paddington take 75 to 82 minutes.

Three tours here cover both: the Windsor, Stonehenge and Bath day, the same trip by another operator, and Stonehenge with Bath and Stratford.

Windsor and Oxford

Windsor and Oxford are the easiest trips to do on your own by train. Windsor takes 28 minutes from Paddington with a change at Slough. Oxford takes 56 minutes direct from Paddington.

The coach from London to Oxford, the Oxford Tube, is the cheap way to go on your own.

To see both with Stonehenge in one day, the Windsor, Oxford and Stonehenge tour covers all three.

The Cotswolds and Stratford-upon-Avon

The Cotswold villages are spread over a wide area, so a tour or a car is the easiest way to see several. Trains reach a few towns, such as Moreton-in-Marsh.

Stratford-upon-Avon is Shakespeare’s home town. Trains from Marylebone take from 2 hours 6 minutes. Three tours here pair Stratford with the Cotswolds, Oxford or Warwick.

Combined UK tour packages from London

Combined tours pack two to four places into one day. They save planning, but each stop is short.

The Harry Potter studio and Oxford day gives you 4 hours at the studio and 2 hours in Oxford. Check its cancellation terms on the listing before you book.

Paris is the long one: book train tickets London to Paris early, or take the organised day trip. Eurostar trains take about 2 hours 16 minutes.

Tour or do it yourself by train

Take the train for one place close to London, like Oxford, Windsor, Cambridge or Brighton. Take a tour for Stonehenge, the Cotswold villages or three places in one day.

Stations and fares are on our getting around London page.

Rail fares change by train and time, so check the fare when you book. Advance tickets on the train company’s own site are usually the cheapest.

London coach tours or the train

A coach tour is a long day on the road. Stonehenge alone is about 2 hours’ drive from central London, per English Heritage.

A tour with Bath and Windsor as well adds more hours on the coach. The train is faster for one place, but you plan everything yourself.

What to know before you go

Most tours start early from central London. Several leave from Victoria Coach Station or Bulleid Way near Victoria. The Cotswolds small group meets in South Kensington, and the Harry Potter trip at Gloucester Road station.

Some tours have two meeting points. Your option sets which one, so check your ticket.

None of these tours lists lunch as included. Entry tickets are often only in some options, so read what your option covers. Tips are extra.

Before you book a day trip from London

  1. Check the meeting point

Some tours have two start points, and your option decides which. Find it on a map the night before.

  2. Read what entry is included

Many tours only include castle or Roman Baths entry in some options. Pick the option you need.

  3. Bring food

None of these tours lists lunch as included. Pack snacks for the coach.

  4. Free cancellation

Seven of these eight tours show free cancellation. Check the terms on the Harry Potter and Oxford listing before you book.

  5. Plan for a long day

Most trips take 10 to 12 hours. Leave the evening free.
